Few protesters continue to demand the resignation of Jovenel Moïse

At the call of the opposition gathered in the Alternative Consensual, protesters walked on the pavement this Friday. Protesters, more than a hundred, have benefited from the presence in Haiti of the number three of the State Department, David Hale, to continue to demand the resignation of President Jovenel Moïse. Part of the airport crossroads, renamed opposition crossroads of resistance, the protest walked the airport road towards the US embassy in Tabarre.

According to André Michel, one of the opposition leaders who launched the demonstration on Friday, there is no cohabitation, let alone possible negotiation with Jovenel Moïse in power. « The Americans are asking us to form a government with Jovenel Moïse. We refute this proposal. We must listen to the voice of the people, of all organized sectors, who demand the resignation of Jovenel Moïse. Americans must not stubbornly support someone rejected by the people, guilty of corruption and human rights violations. We can not negotiate with Jovenel Moïse while 155 people are murdered during the demonstrations », he said, inviting Americans to reason.

Nippes Senator Nènel Cassy said the protest on Friday is a clear message sent to the United States. « Together with our friends in the United States we want to fight together against terrorism, against transnational crimes, against drug trafficking, against corruption […]. In this sense, it is imperative that the United States hear the cry of the Haitian people that urges them not to be complicit in the crimes committed in Haiti by the regime of Jovenel Moïse. It is time for the Americans to accompany Haitians in the fight for change », said Nènel Cassy.

The event on Friday, like those of November 10 and 18, did not make a difference. Questioned for this purpose, André Michel and Nènel Cassy preferred to emphasize the meaning of the approach and not the influx of participants. For André Michel, this low affluence is no problem. « After 8 weeks of mobilization, it is normal to have a break or looseness. The most important thing is that the people are with us, the fight continues. We carry the demands of all Haitians », he said.

For her part, Nènel Cassy believes that the important thing was to send a message. « Everyone can see the support of the Haitian people for this battle. It’s no longer a question of the amount of protesters on the streets. What is important is the message sent by the population. In Gonaives, we made a show of force. In Port-au-Prince we wanted to send a message. Both activities were successful », he says.

The protesters could not reach the US Embassy as they wished. A security device has been established at the Sugarcane Historical Park. CIMO agents used tear gas to disperse demonstrators, some of whom were throwing stones. At least one vehicle was set on fire at the airport where burning tires were also noticed.
