2 min readInsecurity still makes victims in the ranks of the National Police of Haiti. Yesterday evening, it was Inspector Michaël Lucius’s turn to be mortally struck by this phenomenon, which he fought for more than twenty years.
The former Central Director of the Judiciary Police (DCPJ), Michaël Lucius died yesterday, December 1, immediately after being hit by nine projectiles, a few meters from his residence. The incident occurred around 8:30 pm on the bridge between Belvil and Vivy Mitchel, two upscale neighborhoods of Pétion-Ville, which had become a common refuge for those fleeing insecurity at the bottom of the town.
« The first pieces of information would lead to believe that this is a premeditated crime, » said the spokesman of the National Police of Haiti, Michel-Ange Louis-Jeune. Several cartridges were noticed on the spot by the justice of the peace and the judicial police, added the commissioner Louis Jeune before emphasizing that the real circumstances surrounding this tragedy will be revealed by an investigation.
« This is a great loss for the PNH » regrets Pierre Espérance, executive director of the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights (RNDDH). While presenting his sympathies to the relatives of the victim, the human rights defender announces an investigation of the organization he leads around this issue.
Same story of Marie Yoleine Gilles of the Je Klere Foundation (FJKL) who remembers the remarkable work done by the deceased in the dismantling of gangs during his time as head of the DCPJ. Expressing dismay at the disappearance, the human rights activist urges the police and judicial authorities to make the day on this case.
This incident is the second attack suffered by this senior executive of the police institution. Indeed, on September 25, 2007, Michael Lucius was the target of the thugs who had fired at him at Puits Blain (Frères). Reached three bullets, he was saved thanks to emergency care.
Let us note that a few days before the crime, on Tuesday, November 26, Michael Lucius had posted on his Facebook page, the following message: « Why all this?
